Experimenting Photo Essay - Copra : A Forgotten Business
|
|
-------------------------------------"Copra - A Forgotten Business"
Part of the joy driving along Kapar in Klang to Bagan Datuk in Perak is the abandons of green coconut plantation giving breathtaking views. "Tree of Life" or "Tree of a Thousand Uses" is the given nickname for this tree because of the many uses found on it. But the main principal commercial product from coconut is copra and is used primarily as a source of coconut oil.
However, a negative campaign by Western country against saturated fats in general, and the tropical oils in particular led to most food manufactures abandoning coconut oil in favour of polyunsaturated oils such as soybean and corn. At the same time with better economic of return available from oil palm plantation and lack of interest by a farmer on copra production, the long-term viability of this industry is in doubt. But, for a majority of smallholder farmer in Sabak Bernam, 160km north-west of Kuala Lumpur, coconuts is still playing an important role as their main sources of income from one generation to other generation. This is a story of our forgotten business.
--------===-------------
High Up:There are two common methods of harvesting coconuts. These are pole and the climbing methods. Thru the pole method, the harvesting scythe attached to the end of a long bamboo pole. Harvesting using bamboo poles is generally faster, more efficient, less tedious and less dangerous.
---
Maturity Nuts:To attain a coconuts good quality by products, it's advisable that the coconuts to be harvested at the right maturity time. Thus, only the nuts that are partially or completely brown should be harvested for copra making.
---
Dehusking:Dehusking cocounts is a manual process. The principal part of the dehusker is a sharp pointed shard of steel positioned vertically with the sharp point up with the border part firmly on the ground. With a few strong impales plus a strong determined downward movement will loosen the husk from the coconuts shell.
---
Ready To Split:The inner 'stone' of coconuts (endocarp) after the husk are removed then ready to be split into two. The coconut shell are split into two with an axe and the white sponge (if any) be removed before the meat is left to dry in the sun, becoming copra from which coconut oil is extracted.
---
---
One By One:The worker is arranging the split of coconut on open area and left to dry in the sun. The meat is then scraped out and dried one more again before it packed. The separated and dried meat of the coconut constitutes copra which is the source of all of commercial supply of coconut oil.
---
Husk Mountain:A worker is arranging a split coconut shell with a mountain of coconut husk at his back in plantation near Sungai Besar, Sabak Bernam. The coconut fibrous husk can be process to make fibers coir before turn to be other industrial purpose by-products.
---
------
Final Journey:The dry meat of coconut or copra are packed and sell to the copra dealer before it ship to factory for coconut oil production.

Sea Of Red :A woman walks under rows of lanterns inside Thean Hou Temple in Kuala Lumpur on 7 days of Lunar New Year, February 24, 2007. Chinese's Cantonese and Teochews regarded the seventh day of Chinese New Year as everyone's birthday and to celebrate the birthday, it was a practise to have yu sheng (raw fish salad) which sounds the same as 'having an easier way to earn a living'. But for the Chinese Hokkiens communities on another occasion will hold a grand prayers on the eight day and celebrate it with a sugar cane which also known as Thnee Kong Seh (Jade Emperor's birthday).
